Dan Forshaw is one of the most charismatic musicians on the British Jazz scene. A superb communicator with an infectious passion for music, Dan’s ability to captivate audiences with his performances have led him to perform all over the world with ensembles ranging from jazz quartets to classical cathedral choirs. Forshaw is one of the UK’s leading experts on the legendary saxophonist, John Coltrane, and has had a number of articles published on John Coltrane’s music & theology. Tim Price, Professor of saxophone in New York and a former teacher of Dan said, ‘Dan has reached a strong level of musicality, depth and technique that very few players have….he is a breath of fresh air, ‘hear him!’
Dan was taught by Ray Wilkes, a legend on the Northern Jazz scene and a former member of Cedar Walton’s band in New York. Dan started picking up gigs aged 14 and by 16 Dan was on the road with the ‘Amazing Blues Brothers Soul Revue Tour.’
After meeting Branford Marsalis at the RNCM in April 2003, Branford invited Dan to study with him in the USA, which Dan did in March / April 2005. Whilst in New York, Dan was inspired by the many amazing musicians he heard & upon returning to England, he moved to London in the summer of 2005. Dan’s target was to return to New York, but life led him to Ireland where he was an active player on the small but lively Irish Jazz Scene.
Dan is now based in Cambridge, England where he teaches saxophone for Cambridge University and through his award-winning website, Cambridge Saxophone.com. One of life’s natural teachers, Dan has students from all seven continents, (including Antarctica!) and enjoys nothing more than engaging students from all ages with his passion for jazz improvisation. Dan still maintains an active performance schedule with his band performing on the London Jazz Scene (like at Pizza Express Soho), regular tours, and his ‘Jazz Vespers‘ project, which has seen Dan on Prime Time National TV, (BBC One,) leading jazz events at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Ely Cathedral and the at the new home for Jazz Vespers in London, Methodist Central Hall, Westminster.
Dan is an active ‘Vlogger’, with thousands of viewers watching his videos every week. Outside of music Dan enjoys photography, sport, and most of all spending time with his children Aimée and Charlie.

How to Practice Saxophone Scales Like a Pro

My first question: how much does it cost to record an album?
Hi Mark, full budget, FAQs and more are on the album link www.kickstarter.com/projects/165950084/ballads-heartbreak-and-restoration
I found this video because of the quick run in strode rode. Thanks for this video
I’m not much of a soprano fan but the Selmer was a bit warmer to me.
Bechet was die hard cat!
Doing a blind test on the sound, via UA-cam, is in most part missing the point. It's also the airflow, the response and how the horn reacts and feels. If you are going to get a mk6, however, most mk6's from the 50's, will be the best ones to get. Sonny Rollins plays a mk6 from 1967 a 140 xxx range.
This worn out look of Mk VI is so good!
Thanks for the soprano content sir! Like and subscribe!
On the sunny side of the street!
Dan I am in complete agreement with your closing summary.
A was a cleaner sound to me but B seemed to be a little wider in tonal range but it was a little thing. I don’t know which I prefer but I do like both really well.
was a bit back and fourth to which one was which, but I could hear a clear difference. I liked A more as it sounded smoother and a bit more even and slightly mellower. I thought B was louder and sounded a slightly more honky in a couple of notes and not as even in the higher notes.
both saxophones sound fantastic in their own way- the VI has been the standard for decades but the new Supreme is outstanding- at the end of the day it all depends on how you use these horns,ex: if you do commercial gigs like weddings, pop gigs, smooth jazz etc you want a horn that can be mechanically perfect so the Supreme wins, if you are more of a hard core jazz player maybe the VI is the answer, at the end of the day go with makes you feel comfortable the most, both horns are great, can`t go wrong with either.
Yes I have a SA II selmer sop I bought in 90,s . Same problem with the top notes. And I had had too another problem with the little hole near of the top of the instrument after playing 30 ´ the sop , the horn become golgged with the saliva .
The top is always a problem on the Selmers. That is why I play Yanagisawa.
Exsactly. I have a Yani S900 soprano sax, it seems to be a good instrument.
Sounds REALLY good!
I took inspiration from you recently and bought a D'Addario Venn 2.5 clarinet reed for my soprano. It's a total game changer. Thanks.
Glad it’s working out for you
What a wonderful recording of Lonely Woman from your jazz trio. I almost thought you used the Selmer, so I'm looking forward to your blog when you pit your favorite Yani against the Selmer. I'm also using Venn Reeds along with the Harry Hartman Carbon Onyx, depending on the situation, but only on my alto and tenor. I never thought of using the clarinet Venn reeds on my soprano, so thanks for letting me know it works. Just curious about playing the upper register (palm E - you were saying), do you think it's the instrument or reed or you? Regarding Apple, glad you added the sidebar. I got my first Apple computer last Christmas, a refurbished 2019 16" MacBook Pro Core i9 that I'm still wet behind the ears using. So thanks for sharing your experience about an older iPad Pro. My only iPad experience is using a regular 2021 iPad (9th Generation) on gigs with forScore and not much else musically.
Keilwerth is better!!!!
Can you play like scott page saxophone??
No, I play like me
My big pet peeve about cases is they should have a handle on both sides of the case so if you pick it up by both handles there is no way the case can open and spill the horn out if the latches or zipper are not latched or zipped. I had this happen to me in an SKB alto case once. It couldn't cost more than a few extra dollars to add a second handle. My case for my tenor now is a ProTech contoured XL case with space inside for the neck and mouthpiece and a very large pocket on the outside that you could fit a flute case in if you wanted to (probably quite heavy compared to your new case though)
Great interview.
Great Dan!
Yeah Simon!
Well done Charlie, sounding brilliant.
Love it! Nothing like jammin with your son. Or sons in my case. Good job Charlie.
Hi Dan, do you have anymore information in relation to the scicily school 2025. Sounds amazing. Cheers
Hi Andrew sorry about that, it's here sax.coach/sicily-jazz-school/
Sympathique et dynamique votre présentation de ces excellents becs Syos. Bravo !
Removed lacquer from alto saxophone. unlacquer Does a black line appear down the center of the instrument?
Got my '57 from SaxQuest. Set up by TenorMadness. I had to import it. Ian Kirkham had a go on it and was so bowled over he went to the same place for his next Tenor. He told Chris DeMargaris to come and see my sax and called him over because it was an old sax but played just like a new one! Had to beat off the sax player from the Beach Boys to win it, 25 years ago nearly. Bloody expensive then. Yeah, got a few MK VI's and they're all a bit different. Took me 8 years to find my very first one in the UK, they were rare.

Coltrane-Coltrane's Sound Horace Silver- Blowing The Blues Away Hank Mobley-The Workout Lee Morga-Cornbread Jazz Messengers ST album
The app is only available for apple device users. As well as a session band. Which means you should invest into an ios device first. Thumbs down.
I can’t afford a MKVI or a Supreme…. So it’s just a fun vlog to me.
Hi Dan, I have enjoyed your videos over years and I hope you can enjoy your life as you deserve. Thanks for sharing!!
you have 3 coltrane albums here. one is enough. kind of blue was selected by downbeat as the grwatest of all time
I got one at a Carboot sale new for £25 Seems all good, no complaints. I like your Saxophone playing.
Yes but it also good reeds
I'm studying with Max' teacher Rosario Giuliani, he is a person who studies a lot
for you English folks, its: E-onata, not Eye-onata
I've been with you for a couple of years. I actually have your syos signature mouthpiece which is really good for jazz. Since I am a blues and rock kind of player I use a rpc with a high baffle and medium chamber but I do use your signature piece on jazz or softer gigs. Hope you are doing well..sorry about your divorce..and other mysterious things that are possibly going on in your life..please take care of yourself and be blessed.
I think I've been with you since the beginning. When we get together in Detroit it's going to be awesome! Watching till the end. I love the videos when you're sharing your life as well as the saxophone videos. You inspired this OG to get consistent with learning this amazing instrument. Cheers!
Very heartfelt intro, Dan. Haha, love the 500th party poppers retakes with the kids!
the audio is panned to the left brother
Awesome sound on the Scott Page SYOS!! What tip opening were you using on it for the demo?
Thanks 8*
Great to see you with Charlie!
Over 100 dB-OK-watch out! Great Dan!
Way to go Charlie!
I love seeing young children playing an actual instrument. What song were you two playing after Cantaloupe Island?
